As the clocks go back and the evenings become darker, the experience of using public and workplace EV charging infrastructure after dark becomes increasingly important.
For drivers, a good charging experience isn't simply about finding an available charge point. The location, accessibility, visibility and surrounding environment can all influence how comfortable and confident someone feels when plugging in – particularly during the darker autumn and winter months.
For businesses, local authorities and charge point operators planning EV infrastructure, creating charging locations that feel safe and welcoming should therefore be an important part of the specification process.

### **Why Lighting Matters at EV Charging Locations**
Unlike a conventional fuel stop, EV drivers may remain at a charging location for longer periods of time. Depending on the location and charging speed, they may also need to walk between their vehicle, the charger and nearby facilities.
Good lighting can help users clearly identify the charge point, navigate the surrounding area and operate the charger more easily after dark.
This is particularly relevant for chargers installed within:
- Workplace and commercial car parks
- Public car parks
- Retail and leisure destinations
- Hotels and hospitality locations
- Residential developments
- Public charging hubs
As EV charging becomes part of everyday infrastructure, the experience of using it needs to work just as effectively at 8pm on a winter evening as it does during daylight hours.

Safety around EV charging isn't determined by one feature. The design and layout of the wider site, pedestrian routes, accessibility, charger positioning and lighting should all be considered.
However, visibility can play an important role in helping a charging location feel more welcoming.
A well-lit charging area can make it easier for drivers to see their surroundings, locate charging equipment and connect their vehicle. It can also make charging bays and equipment more visible to other people using the site.
For workplaces in particular, this can become increasingly important during the winter months, when employees may arrive before sunrise or leave after dark.
### **Considering Safety and Accessibility Together**
A good charging environment should also consider the different people who may need to use it.
Drivers should be able to approach and operate charging infrastructure as easily as possible, with sufficient space, clear access routes and appropriate positioning of controls and sockets.
Lighting complements these considerations by improving visibility around the charging area and making equipment easier to identify after dark.
Thinking about these elements at the specification stage can help organisations create charging infrastructure that isn't simply functional, but designed around the people who will actually use it.
