At Ratio EV, we've always believed that innovation in EV charging should strive to go beyond basic functionality. Today marks the launch of our new io8 EV charger, a solution that meets the practical needs of EV users while enhancing the ambience and aesthetic appeal of its surroundings.
What’s New?
We built the io8 by adapting the tried and tested design of its sister product, the io7, which launched in Autumn last year. While the io8 still provides illumination for night-time charging for businesses and public spaces much like the io7; the standout feature of the new model is a lighting unit that has the ability to spread light further and more evenly to enhance the atmosphere of its installation site. Using a soft, diffused light emanating from the io8 transforms ordinary parking spaces into inviting, modern spaces.
We see the io8 as being a valuable asset in a wide range of environments and use cases. Take for example a hotel car park or corporate campus, traditionally utilitarian spaces, now bathed in a warm and welcoming glow that contributes to overall architectural lighting designs. The idea was for the io8 to be more than a charging station; having the capability to elevate the appeal of any site where it's installed.
Our General Manager, Tom Jennings, explains: "The io8 is a two-in-one solution that considers the needs of users, installers, and site owners. By combining EV charging capabilities with professional ambient lighting and flexible deployment options, we're setting a new standard for EV infrastructure".
To cater to different environments, site aesthetics, and lighting needs, the io8 is available in multiple height options - 1.5m, 2.5m, and 3m.
Why Lighting Matters
The aesthetic improvements the io8 brings to a site are significant, but the practical benefits of the io8's lighting system are just as important. Here’s what you can expect:
- Safety: We want to create well-lit charging areas to provide a sense of security for users, especially during night time or darker hours
- Visibility: The ambient light coming from the io8 helps drivers locate charging stations easily, even from a distance
- Functionality: The io8’s illumination assists users with finding charging ports and handling cables
- Emergency lighting: In power outage situations, the io8 can serve as emergency lighting for walkways just like the io7 can
What’s Under the Hood
While we’ve put a lot of thought into the design and functionality of the io8, it’s first and foremost a robust BSI Kitemarked charging solution and we’ve made sure it still meets the diverse needs of modern EV infrastructure. Here’s a recap of the main features:
- Charging options: Both single-phase (7.4kW) and three-phase (22kW) configurations available, just like the io7
- Compliance: Meets IEC 61851 Mode 3 standards and PAS 1899 accessibility requirements
- Durability: IK10 rated aluminium body for longevity
- Flexibility: Adaptable to various power availabilities, internet connectivities, and budgets
Keeping the same sustainability credentials as the io7, the io8’s body is primarily constructed from recycled aluminium, often reclaimed from old engine blocks and other automotive components. Many components are sourced locally, with plastics coming from within the UK and castings and extrusions manufactured within 30 miles of our factory. We then build the full charger right here at the Ratio EV HQ.
The io8 still offers advanced load management capabilities just like the rest of our EV charger range. Both static and dynamic load management options are available through the optional io8 Sense hardware, ensuring optimal charging speeds while protecting electrical installations and building infrastructure.
For businesses, we recommend using our free app-based management software, Ratio for Business, which provides customisable access controls, revenue maximisation features, and various payment options including contactless payments.
The Road Ahead
As electric mobility moves forward as a whole, the infrastructure supporting EVs needs to evolve. We believe this evolution should consider not just the practical aspects of charging, but also how charging stations interact with and enhance their environment.
The io8 represents our own vision for the future of EV charging and where this sector is headed – one where functionality meets design, and where EV charging stations contribute positively to the spaces they occupy. Through addressing the practical needs of EV charging while considering the aesthetic impact, we're creating charging environments that are useful, enjoyable, and safe.
